Ulverston monument will reopen with flag-raising

August 19, 2010

The Sir John Barrow Monument will re-open at 12.15pm this Sunday, 22 August at Ulverston.

Sir Anthony Barrow, the 7th Baronet of Ulverson, and also the great, great, great grandson of Sir John Barrow will unveil the monument. Once he has cut the ribbon, the Sea Cadets will raise a flag on the flagpole, which has been newly installed. This will signal that the monument is open.

The flag is to be presented to Ulverston by Trinity House, the organisation which led the proposal to erect the monument.

Other festivities on the day will include the Monumental Gala in Ford Park, which will feature tales and songs of the sea, a performance from the Bread and Butter Theatre Company, Punch and Judy, ferret racing, donkey rides, story-telling, clog dancing and a variety of stalls and rides.

In addition there will be a Welcoming the World flag exhibition, which will show a collection of flags designed by 250 people from across the county of Cumbria, all re-created by artist Wendy Meadley.

Those attending will also witness a spectacular firework display at about 10pm, featuring the newly opened monument.

The Sir John Barrow Monument will be open to the public every afternoon until 30 August between 2pm and 5pm, and then on each Sunday afternoon at the same time.
