Brief History
Brief History
In 1535 flag flown in El Salvador was the burgundy cross of the Viceroy of New Spain as the Spanish Empire controlled the area.
In 1821 the area became part of the First Mexican Empire and the green-white-red vertical tricolour with coat of arms of Mexico at the centre was adopted.

The Flag of the First Mexican Empire (1821 – 1823)
The Federal Republic of Central America replaced the First Mexican Empire in 1823 and the flag was changed to a blue-white-blue horizontal triband with the Republic coat of arms at the centre.
In 1839 a flag featuring 9 alternating blue and white stripes with a red box and nine white stars in the top left corner was adopted as the national flag.

An additional five stars, bringing it to a total of 14, were added to the flag of El Salvador in 1875.
In 1896 El Salvador joined with Nicaragua and Honduras to create the Greater Republic of Central America. A dark blue-white-dark blue horizontal triband with coat of arms at the centre was adopted.

The Flag of the Greater Republic of Central America (1896 – 1898)
In 1912 the flag of El Salvador was changed to a blue-white-blue horizontal triband with coat of arms at the centre similar to the flag of the Great Republic of Central America. A civil flag without the coat of arms was also adopted at this time.

The Coat of Arms of El Salvador
The Coat of Arms of El Salvador was adopted in 1912 and features a yellow-bordered triangle with green volcanoes, blue ocean and hatted staff. At either side of the triangle are two flags of the Federal Republic of Central America, a laurel wreath and the words “REPUBLICA DE EL SALVADOR EN LA AMERICA CENTRAL”.
The Seal of the President of El Salvador
The Seal of the President of El Salvador is similar to the Coat of Arms with the only change being a blue border and the text “PRESIDENCIA DE LA REPUBLICA EL SALVADOR”.
The State Flags of El Salvador
The State flag is similar to the national flag but with the addition of “GOD UNION LIBERTY” written in bold yellow letters through the white band.
