During last week’s student fees riots in London, a thug was picture swinging from the Union Jack flag on the Cenotaph. It has been revealed that the student is is Charlie Gilmour, privileged son of legendary Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour.
Responsible for some of the more eye-catching offensive moments of the riot, the 19 year-old Cambridge history student caused national outrage when he was pictured hanging from the flag attached to the monument. He was also photographed brandishing a rock as potential ammunition, lighting several newspapers on fire on the steps of the Supreme Court, and was pictured among the gang that surrounded and attacked the car containing Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Mr Gilmour was arrested on Sunday in Hove, Sussex, at his family’s luxurious home on suspicion of criminal damage, theft and violent disorder. He remains in custody. The long-haired wannabe anarchist had initially clambered the barrier surrounding the official protest area while waving a red flag and reading excerpts from a volume of poetry by Keats and Shelley. Mr Gilmour’s friends have reported that he was high on LSD at the time.
A grovelling public apology was issued immediately after the protests through his father’s PR company, and his mother, journalist Polly Samson, tweeted to express her shame at her son’s behaviour.
