Brief History

Between 1845 and 1962 the Falkland Islands Dependencies originally administered the area known as the British Antarctic Territory and the flag of the Falkland Islands was flown. The Flag of the Falkland Islands is a British Blue Ensign wit the Coat of Arms of the Falkland Islands centre right.

In 1963 the British Antarctic Territory was formed when the United Kingdom claimed Antarctica as a territory. This due to the Antarctic Treaty being introduced in 1961. A white British Ensign was chosen with the new coat of arms in the centre right.

The Coat of Arms of British Antarctic Territory

The Coat of Arms of the British Antarctic Territory was adopted in 1952. It features a white shield with three blue flowing lines behind a red triangle with golden torch.

At the left side of the shield is a golden lion standing on grass and on the right is an emperor penguin standing on ice. Above is a helmet with a ship representing the RRS Discovery and underneath is the motto “RESEARCH AND DISCOVERY”

The Government Ensign of the British Antarctic Territory

The Government Ensign of the British Antarctic Territory is a blue Ensign that features the shield from the coat of arms.

The British Antarctic Survey also uses this Ensign on their ships.

The Flag of the Commissioner of the British Antarctic Territory

The Flag of the Commissioner of the British Antarctic Territory is the flag of the head of the government of British Antarctic Territory.

It is a union flag defaced with a white circle surrounded by laurel and the Coat of Arms of the British Antarctic Territory in the centre.
