Brief History

From the 7th Century to 1886 the flag the Bruneian Empire was a simple yellow field, the royal colour of the Sultan of Brunei.  When Brunei became a British protectorate in 1886 the flag remained the simple yellow field until 1906 when black and white diagonal stripes were added.

In 1959 Brunei became a self-governing state that was still under the responsibility of the United Kingdom. The national emblem of Brunei was added to the centre of the flag.

From 1962 the independence movement had it’s own Republican rebellion flag, which featured a red and white horizontal bicolour with a green triangle on the left hand side. On the 1st of January 1984 Brunei gained independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the flag remained unchanged.

The Royal Standard of Brunei is a plain yellow field with the red royal crest in the centre.

The National Emblem of Brunei

The emblem of Brunei was adopted in 1932. It features a yellow winged umbrella of the royal authority rising from a pillar with ‘BRUNEI” in Arabic. In 1950 the emblem was changed slightly adding the Islamic crescent and a golden oval surrounding the emblem.

The modern National Emblem of Brunei was adopted in 1959 and features all the elements of the previous national emblems in red with upturned hands replacing the oval. Also the national moto “Always render service with God’s Guidance” was added inside the crescent and a banner with “Brunei, the Abode of Peace” added underneath.

The Coat of Arms of the Royal Brunei Army

The Coat of Arms of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces is different to all other symbols due to its modern silver colour and style. It features a five pointed star behind the wings of the Air Force, the anchor of the Navy and swords of the land forces with the national emblem in the centre.
