The Cayman Islands has been under British Control since 1670. Prior to being granted a coat of arms the Union Flag was the official flag flown on the island. In 1958 A British Blue Ensign with coat of arms was adopted.

In 1999 the white disc was removed and the coat of arms enlarged to bring the British Blue Ensign up-to-date with other British flags. The pre-1999 flag is still flown on some occasions.
