Brief History

The first known flag on the Island of Curaçao was the red-white-blue horizontal tricolour of the Dutch West India Company.

In 1815 the Dutch red-white-blue horizontal tricolour was adopted as the official flag of the group of islands called Curaçao and Dependencies.  From 1936 the area was renamed the Territory of Curaçao and the flag remained the same.

In 1954 Curaçao and Dependencies became collectively known as the Netherlands Antilles. The flag consisted of a white field with crossing red and blue stripes inside of which were six five-pointed white stars, each star representing the six main islands.  When Aruba left the group in 1986 a white star was removed. In 2010 the Netherland Antilles was disbanded.

The Flag of Curaçao was adopted in 1982. It features a plain blue field with yellow diagonal stripe and two five-pointed stars in the top left corner. Each point of the white stars represents the five continents of the Curaçao people.  In 1984 the stars were rotated so they point upward.

The Coat of Arms of Curaçao

The Coat of Arms of Curaçao is a crowned shield split in two. The left portion depicts a trade ship and the right portion depicts a citrus tree. In the centre is a smaller red shield of Amsterdam with horizontal black bar and three white Xs.

The Flag of the Governor of Curaçao

The Flag of the Governor of Curaçao is a white field with a circular national flag in the centre and stretched Dutch flag above and below.
