Brief History

The first national flag of Liberia was adopted in 1827; it is very similar to the flag of the United States as it was a Colony of the United States of America previously. It featured eleven red and white stripes with a blue square and white cross in the left hand corner. The Flag of the United States of America, featuring 26 stars, was also flown in Liberia until 1845.

The current national flag was adopted in 1945 and is similar to the previous flags, with the white star replacing the cross.

The Coat of Arms of Liberia

The Coat of Arms of Liberia features a gold-bordered shield with an image of a ship arriving to the land of Liberia with a rising sun. On the land is a plough, shovel and palm tree and above the ship is a white dove holding a letter.  The scene is said to represent the slaves coming back from America to Liberia.

Above the shield is the motto “THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HEAR” and below is “REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA.”

The Standard of the President of Liberia

The Standard of the President of Liberia features a dark blue field with a white five-pointed star in each corner. At the centre is the Coat of Arms of Liberia.

The Flags of the Counties of Liberia

Each County of Liberia has an individual flag here are some examples.
