Brief History

Between 1918 and 1943 Macedonia was under the blue-white-red tricolour Flag of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

The first modern flag of Macedonian was created in 1944 when the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was divided and Macedonia became an independent state. The new flag would be a plain red field with the outline of a gold star in its centre.

In 1946 it became one of the six republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia after loosing its independence. The name of the country was changed to the Socialist Republic of Macedonia and it kept the pain red flag with a smaller outline of a gold star.

After the independence of Macedonia in 1991 the flag remained in use because the officials could not agree on a design for a new flag. It wasn’t until August 1992 that a new flag was adopted; this was a plain red flag with the symbol of the Vergina Sun, a yellow sun in the centre with eight rays coming to a point.

In 1995 Greece imposed an economic blockade on the Republic of Macedonia because it wanted the Vergina Sun on the flag removed, citing that they had copyright on the image. After a year the Macedonians removed the Vergina sun and replaced it with “the new sun of liberty”.

The National Emblem of the Republic of Macedonia

The National Emblem of the Republic of Macedonia features a sun with eight rays shining over the blue Sar Mountins and River Vardar.

Surrounding is two sheaves of wheat, tobacco and poppy fruits, tied together with a ribbon featuring traditional folk motifs.

This is very similar to the previous emblems under the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, the difference being the lack of a five-pointed red star on the modern emblem.

The Coat of Arms of the President of the Republic of Macedonia

When the new Emblem was conceived in 2009 a new Coat of Arms for the present was adopted.

The Coat of Arms features the sun from the national flag on a shield with a wreath of Macedonian oak, featuring sixteen leaves and sixteen acorns.
