Brief History

In 1884 Germany ruled Namibia as part of German South West Africa. The flag at that point was the German black-white-red horizontal tricolour. Allegedly there was a proposed flag at the time that featured a shield in the white stripe that featured a silver ox’s head.

The German’s were forced out of South West Africa during World War One and in 1915 the British clamed the land as a Protectorate of the British Empire. A new flag was a red ensign with the Union Flag in the top left hand corner and a shield with white circle in the right hand corner.

In 1960 the flag was changed when the area became a Trusteeship with Britain and South Africa. The new flag featured an orange-white-blue horizontal tricolour with the Union Jack, the South African national flag and the flag of the SWAPO.

When Namibia gained full independence in 1990 a new flag was designed. It features a white-bordered diagonal red stripe representing peace and the people. The upper part is the blue representing the Namibian sky and the lower green part is the agricultural resources.  In the blue portion is a sun that represents life and energy.

The Coat of Arms of Namibia

The Coat of Arms of Namibia was adopted in 1990 and features a shield of the national flag supported by two gemsbok, a African fish eagle above it and “UNITY, LIBERTY, JUSTICE” below.

The National Seal of Namibia is the coat of arms surrounded by a border featuring the words “NAMIBIA, UNITY, LIBERTIY, JUSTICE”.

The Presidential Standard of Namibia

The Presidential Standard of Namibia features a flag made up of blue, yellow, green triangles with the coat of arms of Namibia in the yellow portion.
