Brief History

From 1858 the flag of Tongatapu was a white field with two blue crosses on the left, two red crossed on the right and a Blue M below a red A in the centre.

In 1862 the country became Tonga and a new flag was adopted. It featured a plain red field with a large red cross designed by Prince Uelingatoni Ngu Tupoumalohi and Pastor Shirley Baker. The red cross symbolises blood shed by and the cross of Jesus Christ.

In 1875 it was written into the nation’s constitution that a new plain red field with a white rectangle and red cross top left was adopted. The national flag can never be changed. All the elements of the flag reflect Christianity.

The Coat of Arms of Tonga

The Coat of Arms of Tonga was adopted in 1875. The design is a shield with ornate gold border split into four parts.

Top left is three white stars on a gold border, bottom right are three crossed swords on a yellow border. The bottom left portion is white dove on a blue background and top right is a crown on a red background. In the centre is a white star with a red cross.

Above the shield is crown, two national flags and a laurel branch. Below is a banner with the motto “GOD AND TONGER ARE MY INHERITANCE”.

The Royal Standard of Tonga

The Royal Standard of Tonga is a version of the design on the shield of the national Coat of Arms.

Top left is three white stars on a gold border, bottom right are three crossed swords on a yellow border. The bottom left portion is white dove on a blue background and top right is a crown on a red background. In the centre is a white star with a red cross.

The Naval Ensign of Tonga

The Naval Ensign of Tonga is a 1:2 proportioned white field with a red and white bordered offset cross and a small red cross top left.

The Flag of the Tonga Defence Services

The Flag of the Tonga Defence Services is a white field with a crowned red-bordered white shield and three crossed swords emblem in the left side.
